College of Humanities Scholarships

The College of Humanities offers scholarships to incoming freshman and continuing students. For a description of the scholarships offered by the University and by the College, go to http://www.humanities.utah.edu/. Application deadlines for these scholarships vary, but they are generally during spring semester. Department of History Scholarship Information:

The Department of History offers both departmental scholarships and donor scholarships. You do not have to apply for federal or state financial aid to be considered for these scholarships. Please submit ALL scholarship materials in an envelope.

For all scholarship applicants, please complete and submit the recommendation form to each of your recommenders (writable pdf). Letter of recommendation form.

Departmental Scholarships

The Department of History offers scholarships to currently enrolled history majors and to entering freshman and transfer students who intend to major in history. The deadline for submission for all application material is March 3. Turn in all application materials to the Department of History suite 310 Carolyn Tanner Irish Humanities Building (CTIHB) or mail them to:

Currently Enrolled History Majors with a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher should submit to the Department of History the Application for Departmental Scholarships, a copy of their college transcript, and three letters of recommendation from professors (History professors preferred).

Incoming Freshmen and Transfer Students with a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher should submit to the Department of History the Application for Departmental Scholarships, a copy of their college transcript, and three letters of recommendation from professors (History professors preferred).

Gregory C. Crampton Memorial Scholarship

The Gregory C. Crampton Memorial Scholarship provides a tuition waiver for up to $2000 for the upcoming academic year (fall AND spring) for a University of Utah undergraduate student majoring in history. The student must be enrolled in a minimum of 12 credit hours, a junior or senior in the year that funding is received, and carry a cumulative GPA of 3.3 or higher.

Applications must be complete and submitted to the Department of History by March 3.

Applications must include:

  • A completed application form.
  • A one-page personal statement explaining the student's area of strongest interest within the discipline of history.
  • An official University of Utah transcript and/or transcripts from other colleges/universities attended.
  • Three letters of recommendation from professors (History professors preferred). These letters should be confidential and must be in sealed envelopes with the recommender's signature written across the seal.

James H. and Mary Ann Gardner Scholarship

The James H. and Mary Ann Gardner Scholarship provides a resident tuition waiver for up to $4000 for the upcoming academic year (fall AND spring) for a University of Utah undergraduate student majoring in history. The student must be enrolled in a minimum of 12 credit hours, a junior or senior in the year that funding is received, and carry a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher. Preference will be given to applicants who are preparing for graduate training in business, law or medicine.

Applications must be complete and submitted to the Department of History by March 3.

Applications must include:

  • A completed application form.
  • A one page statement explaining how the study of history helps to prepare one for a career in the fields of business, law or medicine.
  • An official University of Utah transcript and/or transcripts from other colleges/universities attended.
  • Three letters of recommendation from professors (History professors preferred). These letters should be confidential and must be in sealed envelopes with the recommender's signature across the seal.

Harvard David Hanks Scholarship

The Harvard David Hanks Scholarship provides a tuition waiver for up to $6000 for the upcoming academic year (fall AND spring) for a University of Utah student majoring in history with a focus in American history. The student must be enrolled in a minimum of 12 credit hours, a sophomore, junior, or senior in the year that funding is received, carry a cumulative GPA of 3.3 or higher, a US citizen, and no prior history of the use or sale of illegal drugs. Preference will be given to non-resident students from Idaho. If no qualified applicants satisfy this condition, preference will be given to non-residents from other states outside of Utah.

Applications must be complete and submitted to the Department of History by March 3.

Applications must include:

  • A completed application form.
  • A one-page personal statement that explains why the student chose to major in American history at the University of Utah.
  • An official University of Utah transcript and/or transcripts from other colleges/universities attended.
  • Three letters of recommendation from professors (History professors preferred). These letters should be confidential and must be in sealed envelopes with the recommender's signature across the seal.

John Williams James Family Scholarship

The John Williams James Family Scholarship provides a tuition waiver for up to $6000 for the upcoming academic year (fall AND spring) for a University of Utah undergraduate majoring in history. The student must be enrolled for a minimum of 12 credit hours, a junior or senior in the year that funding is received, carry a cumulative GPA of 3.3 or higher, and a US Citizen.

Applications must be complete and submitted to the Department of History, CTIHB 310 by March 3.

Applications must include:

  • A completed application form.
  • A one-page personal statement explaining the student's area of strongest interest within the discipline of history.
  • An official University of Utah transcript and/or transcripts from other colleges/universities attended.
  • Three letters of recommendation from professors (History professors preferred). These letters should be confidential and must be in sealed envelopes with the recommender's signature across the seal.

Susannah Topham Memorial Scholarship

The Susannah Topham Memorial Scholarship provides a tuition waiver and book scholarship for up to $7500 for the upcoming academic year (fall AND spring) for a University of Utah undergraduate student majoring in history. The student must be enrolled for a minimum of 12 credit hours, a junior or senior in the year that funding is received, and carry a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher. Preference will be given to applicants who demonstrate interest in historical archaeology or environmental history, are Utah high school graduates, and who are female.

Applications must be complete and submitted to the Department of History, CTIHB 310 by March 3.

Applications must include:

  • A completed application form.
  • A one-page personal statement explaining the student's area of strongest interest within the discipline of history.
  • An official University of Utah transcript and/or transcripts from other colleges/universities attended.
  • Three letters of recommendation from professors (History professors preferred). These letters should be confidential and must be in sealed envelopes with the recommender's signature across the seal.

HISTORY ESSAY CONTEST

*Student must be a declared history undergraduate (teaching major or minor, academic major or minor). 
*Essay may be from any University of Utah history course.
*Essay must be typed, double-spaced with proper footnotes and bibliographies.
*Please include the following information in the body of the email: your name, uNID, email address, essay title, and history course.

*The student's name nor any other identifying information must not appear on any pages of the essay. 

Submit your essay via email to Amarilys Scott at amarilys.scott@utah.edu by Monday, April 7 at 5:00 PM.  Please title your email "2015-2016 Essay Contest". 

SPECIAL ANNUAL AWARDS

  • The Hans Morrow Junior Award honors the most outstanding Junior. ($150)
  • The Senior with the Highest GPA Award honors the graduating senior with the highest cumulative GPA. ($150)
  • The Utah Historical Society Award honors the student chosen as the best undergraduate enrolled in history classes on Utah during the current academic year. (A one year subscription to the Utah Historical Quarterly)

We are no longer accepting applications. The winners will be announced March 26, 2018.

  • 1st Place – $5,000 and a scholarship to our 2018 Constitutional Academy in Washington, D.C.
